Re: preparing children for wealth

Maybe discussions about spending aren't the right focus, I mean they are great talking points but what might really get them salivating is you teaching them about compounding interest. When the oldest turns 18 start giving weekly financial lessons, Give some examples starting today with one dollar, ...

Re: Buying high mileage vehicles...

My subaru with 170,000 Miles is just getting worn in, The body will rust out before the drivetrain dies. It did come with a maintenance record an inch thick. The only thing I will need is a timing belt in 30,000 Miles and some shift linkage bushings. I like high mileage vehicles, they're cheap

Re: Bogleheads, how do you search for a job?

My current job (engineer) was landed by merely walking in, luckily they had weekly open interviews. It is a manufacturing company and I walked in dressed in a nice business style (button down, slacks, nice shoes) and the HR manager came out to talk to me directly rather than her assistant who was in...

Re: Plan for my financially irresponsible Father

I would also look into a credit freeze so he can't get any more credit cards, and just use a bank card, no money in the bank=no spending.

Re: Weight Loss Plans?

Never pay for a weight loss plan. Use an app like MyFitnessPal to track calories, eat 500 to 1000 calories less than maintenance. Eat whatever you want but you'll be looking for more filling food if all you eat is calorie dense junk. Do some searching for calorie deficit. No other rules or anything,...

Re: Help me save on my $130 cell phone bill

Try one of the ones listed here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Un ... _operators

I'm using Go Redpocket, you could lower your bill to $80/mo with it but you would need an ATT phone.

Re: Attic Sealing & Insulation...

I've been doing some research for my dreamhome (many years away) and one design methodology I love is something called passivehaus from germany, or in america simply passivehouse. You may want to do some research on this and steal some ideas, here are some off the top of my head that haven't already...

Re: Finance Plans, Big Spend, Bigger Payoff.

Wow! He sure is getting cheap veterinary labor for just a hint of future benefit. It would be nice if he at least paid some of the student loans. I am just wondering if she needs some professional advice here. I suspect you are in an area where just a handshake is common but still even a verbal agr...

Use windfall for Edu loans or downpayment that adds income?

This is a bit of a continuation of http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=122293&newpost=1790787 where I asked how to convince my fiancee to switch from a PNC AUM portfolio to a self-run VG 3 fund portfolio. It was suggested that some of that inheritance money should instead go ...

Re: Advising my fiancee on her investments.

Thanks for everyone's assistance. The windfall was only $25k but hey, it's $25k. It is true they just added her funds to one of their "model" investment accounts, she wasn't advised to put her money in these funds herself. The total pnc fees were $712 over 1.68 years where it grew from $25...

Advising my fiancee on her investments.

My fiancee got a small windfall a few years ago and wasn't sure what to do with it. At the time she went to the local branch of her bank (PNC) and they set up an individual investment account for her. The fees are too high but I'm not sure how to actually calculate PNC's fees, they are well obfuscat...
