Re: Looking for advice, criticism, and guidance

Your questions are really unanswerable, except I would not bother with a 529 plan if I was living outside the US. Not for the OP, but for others reading the thread: I don't see a problem with living in Turkey and raising a family in Turkey. I have visited Turkey and my spouse has been there more th...

Re: Aggressive Mortgage Paydown

I am 37, DW is 34, two kids age 9 and 6 months. We were in a similar situation; pay off the mortgage or invest. We chose paying off the mortgage and we paid ~$400k mortgage in 5+ years in 2012. This move opened up a door for us to fulfill one of our dreams, which is living overseas for awhile. Greet...

Re: Schooling for a 2year and 4 year old

I believe kids should be kids. I am not an educator but I have seen enough kids who were burnt out by the time they reach middle school due to excessive activities they were put through by their parents. A person whom I know very closely had started school at a very early age due to her IQ. She has ...

Re: How to get over finance envy

We are in the process of renting our home for a few years since we plan to travel/live overseas. There is a strong interest in it and our Realtor has received many applications. But be warned: Looks can be DECEIVING! We had a showing the other day and a lady with her later model and fairly expensive...

Re: Amana Portfolio Allocation

This is from another discussion about this topic here: http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/posting.php?mode=quote&f=1&p=1738282 I thought it might help for this discussion as well. I know this is quite a few months after the original post, but I hope the OP finds the following information useful...

Re: Should I sell my house or rent it?

Some recent developments about this: 1) We did list the house for sale, got two decent offers highest being $362k 2) We also did apply for the Rental Permit with the Town. I did some of the work myself (floor plans, etc.) 3) We have obtained the rental permit in late June. With that, we are no longe...

Same to exclude the main culprit (financial sector), but reasonably lower ER's than Amana.

Thanks for sharing it. Do you currently own them?

Re: Amana Portfolio Allocation

I am also on the same boat with the OP. I think WISEX could be considered as bond equivalent and ADJEX could provide more US stock exposure. AMDWX could also be used for international exposure. Based on Morningstar x-ray, each fund's AA is below. AMANX Cash 3% U.S. Stocks 78% Foreign 19% AMAGX Cash...

Re: No permanent home, overseas visits, ineligible for umbre

I am also planning to live overseas for an extended period of time starting this summer. I have just signed up with an online mailbox service who provides a street address. I filled out USPS Form 1583 – Delivery of Mail Through Agent so I think that covers the address issue.

Re: What to make of this - hot air or not?

"It’s very likely that these professional investors are aware of specific research that points toward a massive market correction, as much as 90%." Could I say that "It's very likely that the stocks would go up 90% within x months". I guess I can and it would be right eventually!...

Re: Should I sell my house or rent it?

Thank you mlipps & Chan_va. We really don’t need the money right away and will definitely use it for mid-to-long term investment. I had made my plans on renting it but the Realtor just told me that I need to get a town permit to rent. The thing is that we are leaving within 2 months, so I am a l...

Re: Can I retire?

Thank you all for your comments so far. You've identified a few things that I need to investigate in more detail. The absence of a consensus or majority opinion from this educated forum of people saying "you are insane" gives me a good deal of comfort. I can adjust expenses downward, make...

Re: Family Finances - Are we doing something wrong?

I think the OP needs a forced intervention here where he/she is required to spend $10k on an extravagent vacation, gift, etc for the family. You are forgetting why you are are working in the first place. If you think one more dollar squirreled away can prevent the risk of life--- and this is what i...

Re: Selling Home. Put towards current mortgage or invest?

We were in a somewhat similar position a few years ago. My wife and I (both mid-30s) don't like debt (religious + personal reasons) and our home mortgage was our only debt. In order to pay off the house, we paid about $300,000 extra into our home mortgage (~$400k) from September 2010 to April 2012. ...
