Re: Checking up on Mom: Individual bonds and other scary thi

Getting rid of the bonds now necessarily means selling them on the secondary market, where retail sellers really, really get the shaft. It could be that the shaft is so severe that your mom is better off just hanging on to the bonds until they mature. Actually computing that comparison between sell...

Re: Checking up on Mom: Individual bonds and other scary thi

Maybe tell her this story. My Dad was sold some individual bonds at Schwab. My brothers and I inherited them. One was a GM bond, and when GM went through their bankruptcy (or whatever it was), I think I got about 30 cents or less on the dollar when I sold the bond, so about $3,000 for a bond my Dad...

Re: Checking up on Mom: Individual bonds and other scary thi

My real question is what should I do at this point. If the broker has much of the money in some variable annuity, is there much benefit in switching to a fee only planner? Anyone found themselves in a similar situation and had success getting the house cleaned up for a parent? IMO, the real questio...

Re: Checking up on Mom: Individual bonds and other scary thi

Thanks for the comments. It is Qwest Corp. And yes, the document indicates that Morgan Stanley acted as principal, so they certainly got more than $13 out of the deal. My real question is what should I do at this point. If the broker has much of the money in some variable annuity, is there much bene...

This is what I feared. Thanks for the reply.

Checking up on Mom: Individual bonds and other scary things

Hi all, I am trying to help my mom get a better hold on her finances, and, in reviewing her brokerage accounts, I have uncovered some things that concern me. I would like some help in figuring out what is going on. Please share some advice about what questions to ask the broker, and even some wisdom...

Advice for Late June Honeymoon on Student Budget

Hello! My fiance and I are getting married in late June, and I would love some advice on honeymoon planning. We are both in graduate school (she is graduating, I am a few years from that point). I was hoping to go somewhere interesting, with nice weather, for 5-7 days, and stay under a $1500 budget ...

Re: Naturally whiten teeth?

"Naturally" whitening teeth is an interesting idea. I do find it funny that if a product is familiar to people, and they grew up with it around the house, it is safe and natural. The truth is that baking soda is as "natural" as the different forms of peroxide found in Crest White...

Thank You!

Thanks for all the replies. I got one of "The Oblivious Investor's" books (his name is Mike Piper...very well written and extremely short...there should be more pamphlet ebooks of this quality). I'll also order the other "couples" book that everyone recommended. As for my usernam...

Thanks!...any books for the relationships side

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll certainly look into the investment books you all recommended. Any suggestions for books that might appeal to my fiance, who is not as much of a finance nerd as me. The "little book" series sounds like a good start.

Thanks again.

Current situation: Emergency funds = $1000 in savings account Debt: 17k @0%, just made 2nd payment on 60 month loan (ideally, I wil...

Bob, Didn't see your post before I replied. Thanks for the advice. I was thrilled to hear from someone who went down a path similar to the one I plan to pursue. I'm quite okay with making $90k in my first few years. Considering that the taxpayers will have funded a significant portion of my educatio...

@bigROI My current IRA is entirely in a target 2050 fund with a 90/10 split. If I invested in dental school, I would invest far more conservatively. You make a very good point. Losing 50% would be very unpleasant, and certainly unwise with borrowed money. @EmergDoc Thanks for the understanding. Not ...

Dental/PhD student with short window to invest in Roth IRA

Hello Boglehead community! Thanks to you all for helping me learn so much about investing and personal finance. I have a question that I haven't seen answered elsewhere: Would it be prudent to borrow to fund a Roth IRA if I expect a significant increase in income in the future? The details: I am 23,...
