I think the best advice I saw in a similar thread was to demonstrate to those that have the greatest investment in the 401k that they are leaving money on the table and let them do the heavy lifting. I think sometimes HR gets gate keeper syndrome and will shoot you down because they can.

All I know is in the short there are ups and downs but in the long its uphill. I check my Vanguard Roth and Brokerage every 1-3 days, mostly because I have only been investing beyond my 401k for a short time. I don't get anxious I just like to see the ebb and flows.

I recently purchases a used Motoroal Droid X2 (Sprint/PagePlus) and the user didn't wipe it before hand. If you are coming from an iPhone I doubt you will like an Android. Drop the postpaid, go prepaid and get a used iPhone 4 and you will be set for another two years.

I signed up for so many free magazines I get so many offers, they eventually thin out. WSJ 6 months was the worst free subscription, too much too read and too much calling after it ended. Businessweek is my current favorite free subscription and maybe the only one left, I stopped signing up.

I use my Roth as an emergency fund that will hopefully remain a retirement fund. You can always pull out the principle tax and penalty free. My game plan now is to invest in taxable and transfer max Roth near yearly deadline. I am currently maxing 401k and Roth. My income is close to yours.
