Re: Helping widowed mother with finances

My condolences. Agree that the 3% return from the $50,000 life insurance is a good deal, and with investing the $25,000 from the other policy in CDs. Most advise going slow in this situation, and this will allow your mother to do that while preserving the funds. Your mother does not need life insur...

Re: Helping widowed mother with finances

Hello, and I'm sorry for your loss. Hello all! My father passed away a few weeks ago, and as a Boglehead-in-training, I'm trying to help my mom sort out the finances and get everything in order so she's set in the future. I'm hoping you all can help me create a plan for her - investing for my 27yo ...

Re: Daughter getting married

I just got married last September, and was fortunate to have my parents give me a budget of $15k (more than my now-husband and I were planning on paying if we did it ourselves) in a relatively high COL area. They gave it to me in a few installments, and I meticulously tracked expenses (I'm an engine...

Re: Best way to send flowers?

I like the idea of calling up the local flower shops, but if you do go through one of the big sites, FTD offers free shipping/delivery through Shoprunner. You can get Shoprunner for free indefinitely if you have an AmEx card, and Shoprunner also has some promotions - free trials and currently has a ...

Re: climbing rope recommendations?

Unfortunately, I can't be much help as far as recommending a specific rope - I've been a user, but not a purchaser! However, as a search and rescue volunteer, my groups frequently purchase equipment through Karst Sports - they have reasonable prices, free (and prompt) shipping, and great equipment. ...

Absolutely agree! I just want to have a ring that can last as long as I hope my marriage does

Re: Cell Phone Contract Expiring & Desire to Save $$

Since you already have a T-mobile smartphone, if you're okay with keeping your current phone and still want T-mobile service, I'd look at the Straight Talk plans previously mentioned or the T-mobile $30 prepaid plan - unlimited data and text with 100 minutes talk (scroll all the way down at http://p...

Re: Wedding band durability & long-term costs- gold vs plati

Wow, where can you get platinum band for $300 nowadays? I got mine over 6 years ago (4.5 mm, 950) for nearly $600 and it was considered to be exceptional deal that I only got thanks to some size-related pricing anomalies on the jeweler's site I purchased from, even after another $50 spent to resize...

Wedding band durability & long-term costs- gold vs platinum?

I'm shopping for wedding rings, and plan on purchasing a basic thin band to go with my 14k white gold engagement ring. I can purchase the 14k white gold band for ~$100, and a platinum one for ~$300 - neither one is going to break the bank, and I'm not concerned about the potential color difference. ...
