Living on savings

Wife and I (age 61) recently flipped our asset allocation from 60/40 total stock fund to 40/60 total stocks. Reason is income from a 60% Fidelity total bond allocation will provide sustainable survival income regardless of bond capital erosion or stock market collapse. We believe we can ignore bond ...

Re: San Diego Bogleheads Meeting Monday, July 15

Yes, the meeting was very enjoyable with great insights to boot! As a first-timer I'd like to thank all the attenders for the open, welcoming environment. I look forward to returning.

Re: My new dishwasher doesn't clean

REad the detergent ingredients. If it does not have phosphate, it isn't any good ([OT comment removed by admin LadyGeek]). Go online and find commercial grade cascade powder with phosphates.

Re: "portable" room ac - with hose(s) to window?

I am pretty sure you will find even the one hose unit is to vent hot air outside. You cannot have hot/cold blowing into the same room. It just won't do any good. Ours does a great job, venting out a window, for a large bedroom/master bath. Costs about $20 a month to run 8 hours a night for sleeping.

Re: Cutting the cord on Cable

If you kept high speed internet from the cable company, you might try hooking the leftover cable back to the tv an doing a channel search using cable tuner setting. The same cable carries HSI and tv programming. They trap out the costly midrange channels and sports. We find that the local network ch...

Re: Disgusting mailer from Fidelity

I have a feeling you have embellished the line about "managing your personal finances". We have been with Fidelity for 35 years and have never received any "predatory" or offensive communications. Seems to me it is our personal responsibility to educate ourselves and understand w...

Re: Electric cars (full electrics and plug-in hybrids)

Granted, I am way overly cynical, but you pay ultimately $40K for sub-compact. You don't save any real energy cost unless you can get subsidized electric to recharge by hanging out at Target for 5 or 6 hours. I did not see the question about how the A/C gets along with the batteries, but probably ju...

Re: Cash versus bonds-Why not?

I searched out this topic because I am getting frustrating questions from wifey I cannot answer. We retired 8mo ago with a 30yr horizon and rolled all 401K/pension money into existing Fidelity IRA account. Now our % allocation and ER's are 29 domestic FSTVX 0.07/26 international FSIVX 0.07/37 Interm...
