I'm a firm believer in the self-fulfilling prophecy. If one behaves in a way that reflects a reasonable optimism about the future, one's future has a better chance of justifying that optimism. We may see some of that behavior (or its inverse) in relation to the Mayan prophecies about December 21st....

... but not ALL bogleheads invest exactly alike. Some hold more equities, some less; some own nothing but total markets, some slice and dice; some rebalance more or less frequently than others; etc.

To those who follow it and believe in it, it is both. To those who don't, it is merely a philosophy. I think the main reason more people don't follow the "Bogle" philosophy of investing is because they have egos that won't fit inside a total market approach.
