2014 First quarter total return calculations

This may be a silly question but is the total YTD return for The Vanguard ETF VTI Total Market Index, The SPY, or any other fund for that matter calculated from the closing price on December 31st of the previous year or the close on January second?

Can't find server!

I can sign on to Firefox or IE and surf the Internet, however I can't sign onto Vanguard to view my accounts.I get an error message "can't find server". If I wait a while and sign in at a later time I will be able to open my account page. Can anyone help me?

I know of a couple in which the wife works and contributes to a 401K, while the husband age 67 collects SS. Does his SS count in determining their MAGI? When signing on to my Vanguard account the image of people on screen suddenly changes as I am typing in my password. It makes me think that I am doing something wrong. I know that this will happen every time , but it still bothers me.

Vanguard has a SPIA with a rider that would guarantee a 6.5% withdrawal with no downside risk. The withdrawal could even rise if the the sub accounts do well. This would double the cash flow from her present fixed annuities.

VEU vs EFA

I was surprised to see such differences in performance between these similarly allocated securities. Since March 8th 2007 on a total return basis VEU has lost 17% while the EFA has lost 28%. Anyone have some insight into this?
