Re: Young Guys [and Gals] Making Good Money

Any of you young guys pulling in the dough care to share how you got there? What you majored in, how much you had to rely on connections/networking/school prestige, lifestyle, etc.? Thanks We need threads like this! Very entertaining, and I suspect very near getting locked given so much pis*ing goi...

Re: Young Guys [and Gals] Making Good Money

Does it require a split personality for someone to be a boglehead and work in certain finance jobs, where you're either selling investment products to someone who would be better off buying index funds, or else you're on the buy side and have to convince everyone that any year you beat the market w...

Interesting and true. I don't want to be one of those people. Could be time to do something about it soon.

Re: Young Guys [and Gals] Making Good Money

To add another data point, I majored in CS, came out of college at a relatively low pay, had a couple of job hops that had large salary increases, and then made sure to negotiate for salary accordingly. After leaving company #1 is when I really understood the salary potential I had, and what I had ...

Re: Young Guys [and Gals] Making Good Money

No offense but you don't know what a legal lift is. What's a legal lift? Bench press seems pretty straightforward. I don't know how one can "cheat" at that. http://www.goodlift.org/lift-specific-competition-rules/bench-press/ You have to maintain all 5 points of contact (both feet, back o...

Re: Young Guys [and Gals] Making Good Money

I can actually bench 400, at a bodyweight of 170. No offense, but I sincerely doubt that you are doing it with proper form. I've been working out for over 10 years and have never seen someone at that weight press this much. The raw world record at 165lbs. is 487 by Joe Mazza, one of the greatest be...

Re: Young Guys [and Gals] Making Good Money

I've been at it for 12 years and have insane chest genetics. I'm also shorter at 5'8, therefore t-Rex arms. It has its disadvantages, like for instance, showering. But you're probably right...I have a lot if nagging sports injuries from younger years that mess with my form on some lifts, but I'm cer...

Re: Young Guys [and Gals] Making Good Money

Grog, very good points. I can actually bench 400, at a bodyweight of 170. So I've got that going for me. Should probably compete. Whoever mentioned millionaire next door, that's one of my favorite books. They emphasized owning a business, however, and I can't just up and start a bank, which is why I...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

In other words, there are no soft options. Well there's always the soft option of time. Instead of aspiring to make good money when young, aspire to make six figures by 35-40.... You don't have to kill yourself with high-stress 60+ hour workweeks to achieve that goal. I guess it entirely depends on...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

If I lost my job tomorrow, within a month I would have one that pays nearly the same or more. Can you say that about engineer's in the dot com era? What about today? Are you kidding? You can absolutely say this. Wouldn't take a month, either. Even in 2008 when the sky was falling, I found a job wit...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

This is the last comment I'll make regarding fluff. Really blowing things out of proportion here. I do not feel that things like strategy or operations are worthwhile classroom learning material. They tend to be highly company-specific. I feel that sitting around doing case studies is not worth an a...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

Plan so far is: Continue studying for CPA, in hopes of acquiring it within 6 months. This may open doors. Contact alma mater to see if my MS Finance can be "re-opened" and its credits used as electives for an MBA with Finance concentration. I could knock out all the - are you guys gonna g...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

[ If that opportunity really exists, you'd be crazy to give it up for a short term income boost now. IMO, you are too short-term focused to see the long term opportunity. If being a portfolio manager is a role you want to be in down the road, then you be best served waiting to see how "the han...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

Well it's not an MBA, technically, but a MS Finance, which is the same as an MBA in Finance with all the soft communication, HR, strategy, marketing etc. classes thrown out. I graduated undergrad debt-free but it was in 2008 during the peak of the recession and I had no internships because they wer...

I'm turning 28 next month, have a BS Economics and MS Finance from top 20 schools, and I make ~$55k USD per year from my "main" job. Something is missing from your post, but I cannot figure out what you are not telling us. I manage a group of accountants at a major energy company in a low...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

Of the high earners under 30 I know of: 1) We are generally very high COL areas. Run your income through one of these: http://money.cnn.com/calculator/pf/cost-of-living/ you might be surprised how your income stacks up when you compare your low cost location to say, NYC or Silicon Valley. 2) We are...

Re: Young Guys Making Good Money

- Change careers (IT, healthcare, etc) - Accept working 50-80hrs a week - High risk/high return job such as sales or a small start-up company Those are your options. If there were plenty of six figure jobs with your requirements, the demand would be so high it would end up falling into the catogori...

Re: New Member Looking for Super Aggressive Returns

Thanks everyone. John, I am now eligible for a 401k and have set it to contribute the maximum amount, with a 3% employer match (that vests over 5 years...weak). I am doing lots of reading about frugality via mrmoneymustache.com and earlyretirementextreme to further boost my savings rate. Unfortunate...

New Member Looking for Super Aggressive Returns

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I've been reading about personal finance and investing since I started working when I was 15. I'm 27 now and have about 100k USD in a tax exempt retirement account. This will hopefully improve massively since I've started reading Early Retirement Extreme and Mr Money Mus...
