Re: What's in my 401k?

Its this weirdo other thing that can exist in a 401K, but not a duck. It also does not have a ticker. You will notice after a while, no dividends are ever paid either. As a result its value will change vs. any real 'identical' fund you track it against. Does it also have a very high ER compared actu...

Re: Target's Brightspot from T-Mobile.

Just wanted to post a bit about the T-mobile sims and the activation codes. If you have an existing, unactivated T-mobile sim (say, in a new factory unlocked iPhone), you can activate it as a prepaid sim (despite what T-mobile claims) if you can get a activation code. You don't have to get a whole s...

Re: Mini Cooper or Fiat 500?

Browser wrote:I heard that there have been problems with the Mini's CVT transmission -- some lawsuits. Don't know from personal experience but it might be worth googling.

MINI hasn't sold a CVT transmission in 4 or 5 years. The CVT was only available on R50/R53 cars that went off sale 2007ish

Re: iphone options?

AT&T gophone is another option. Straight talk looked to be too much hassle getting MMS working and their soft/hard data caps gave me pause, no experience though. I always got second class service while on Straighttalk. Data transfer would just stop at random until the phone was rebooted, app st...

Re: iphone options?

The T-Mobile version is unlocked when you buy it direct from Apple (website or store), and has no contract. If you buy from a T-mo store or T-mo web site, it is locked for at least a few months. I just switched to T-mo and bought a prepaid activation code on ebay to fire up the sim card in prepaid m...

Re: pet plan insurance

Investigated it, decided it was better and usually cheaper to self insure our large dog. There were also many stories of breed exclusions (VPI) where the carrier didn't pay for common stuff, we ended up not wanting to do business.

Re: TSP Time to fly to Safety in G Fund?

These two funds, F & especially G, seem like they are heavily invested in US treasuries.

Fundamentally, isn't this a bit like owning stock in your own company, so you are double exposed? Or does this get a pass because its the US gov't?

Re: Identity Safe - password manager

Norton isn't the company I'd choose as a partner for keeping secrets. That said I do use password vaults, including keepass (team use) and 1password (personal). I spent a lot of time searching and researching, before deciding there isn't a perfect product right now. No one offers all the features I ...

Re: Best online portfolio viewing site?

I also build mine in google docs. The funds/ETFs run across the columns, and I use a row for each separate account (roth, 401K, IRA, taxable, brokerage, HSA). Many securities are split across multiple accounts (based on room and tax rules) but the spreadsheet sums up the total shares across accounts...

Re: Best place to get inexpensive glasses

Some websites we've used have been zennioptical.com, coastal.com, and warbyparker.com. My wife and I have purchased a dozen pairs from sites like these. Once we started ordering from these optical web sites we never looked back. The Pupil Distance was easy enough to measure on our own with a ruler-...

Re: Company Sale - 6 months later

Is it possible the 54 funds are the same funds under different tax sheltering accounts? I only have a few funds, but if I count everything on my statement, its a lot more than that.

Otherwise, yes, yikes. You don't get admiral shares when you split 2.5M by 54.

Re: Vanguard admiral vs investor shares?

As to taking out, there are sometimes redemption restrictions, and you would be limited/prevented from additional activity in the fund for X days.

Re: Vanguard admiral vs investor shares?

The share class won't change.* Your shares will stay Admiral, and once the fund is established you can continue to purchase admiral. Think of it like this: some VG funds have a minimum amount to purchase, and have no other share class. You either met the requirements and purchased, or you couldn't. ...

Re: Car guys - Should I sell my car?

Keep the current car. Track days are awesome. But you have chosen one of the most expensive hobbies that exists. The car value isn't the problem, its the sport. Consumables over 2-3 seasons will exceed $10K (tires, pads, fuel, entry fees). Also, occasionally bad stuff happens. Reducing the severity ...

Re: Wireless access point Wifi connection

It will never be as good as a wired connection, but it can be good enough. If she is 'in range' but barely, the speed will be really slow. Instead of running the cable all the way, you run the ethernet part of the distance to her PC, and hide a second Access Point closer to her computer. Run it has ...
