Re: I-Bond Purchase Over the Limit was Allowed ?

I have purchased the max limit of I Bonds for my personal and entity (trust) accounts last year and this year; I do not have a separate tax ID for the trust. No problems. Kevin Pardon my ignorance but I am trying to understand if the trust mentioned in posts above is something like Living Trust or ...

Re: Treasury Direct Online account

I look at it as a loophole in the system. I am using my kids social b/c TD has a limit of $10k each year. If they didn't have that limit, I would just simply buy $30k in my name rather than add my 2 kids into the mix. It doesn't necessarily have to go directly to college expenses, but i certainly t...

Re: Treasury Direct Online account

Just wanted to bump this thread. I want to max out the i-bond purchasing for my family each year (myself, wife, and two kids). Adding the kids was easy. But I can't figure out how to add my wife to be able to buy her $10k from the same account. I would like to make all the purchases from the same b...

Re: Treasury Direct Online account

I am starting the process to convert my and my wife's paper i bonds to electronic version. I finally got around the creating a manifest for my bonds. I must say they could not have made it more complicated, though there conversion guide is helpful. My questions is should I create a new TD account f...

Re: Need help with portfolio review & tax efficient investme

Thanks for the answers and explanations. It sounds like a good plan and I will start executing it ASAP. Finally, I have couple of general investment questions: I have seen recommendation for TIPS, Small cap or precious metals in some cases. Can you tell me when would one need such additional exposur...

Re: Need help with portfolio review & tax efficient investme

More questions about wife's old 401K plan and rolling it over: The old plan already holds substantial amount in Spartan Total Market Index (FSTVX). Given the low ER and the fund being similar to TSM (I could be wrong here and would love to know otherwise), do you see any issue assuming this as contr...

Re: Need help with portfolio review & tax efficient investme

Just found a thread discussing PIMCO Total Return (PTTRX) v/s TBM. Good info there.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=108451

Probably that's the reason you are recommending to move to TBM?

Re: Need help with portfolio review & tax efficient investme

Duckie, here are my follow up questions. I would appreciate your comments. Taxable at Treasury Direct -- 0% 0%
I Savings Bonds What's the reason for 0% in I-Bonds? Or are you just allocation as we start making the changes? Once I start putting 20K in I-Bonds, this will be greater than 0%. BTW, do ...

Re: Ready, aim, [Poll on Jan. 1 tax advantaged contributions

You have the right idea. The advantage is that the expected direction of your investments is to increase in value. Therefore, time spent invested is better than time spent out of the market - on average. DCA holds back some of your capital throughout the course of the year, and that capital has a l...

Re: Ready, aim, [Poll on Jan. 1 tax advantaged contributions

I'm new to (back door) Roth IRAs. I'm trying to understand the reasoning behind funding it ASAP in Jan 2013. I'm assuming it is mainly to take advantage of tax free growth during 2013. Is that correct understanding? Am I missing any specific advantage in funding it right now rather than DCA over the...

Re: Backdoor Roth IRA on 31st Dec?

I've been in the same situation as you (wife with no traditional IRA, we don't qualify for a Roth IRA). We back door the Roth every year, but if I recall correctly, it takes a day or two for the funds to be credited to the traditional IRA before we can convert it to the Roth. You actually don't hav...

Re: Backdoor Roth IRA on 31st Dec?

As per another thread on same topic here (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=107859) its a misconception that one has to open traditional (or Roth IRA) by 31st Dec. So looks like I have more time in hand and no need to rush!

Backdoor Roth IRA on 31st Dec?

Hello Friends, We live in CA and have high income making us ineligible for Roth IRA. But while discussing this topic tonight, I learnt about backdoor Roth IRA conversion. I personally can't do it unless I get rid of my rollover IRA (or pay the taxes) but this could be an option for my spouse since s...

Re: Where to park money for short term (12 months)

BTW, is it typically recommended to invest 100K in lump sum? My tentative target funds include mix of total stock market, international and REIT. There is no typical recommendation. Lump sum has statistically been more successful in the past. However, that's a general case. Specific results will va...

Thanks Dandy. I already have some short term funds at Ally no penalty CDs. It is one of the best options though forces you to withdraw whole CD instead of just part of it. Will check Discover bank.

I suggest the OP consider buying a ladder of California pre-refunded, SLGS-backed municipal bonds. Since you live in California, these will be exempt from both state and federal income taxes. There is essentially no risk of default and the yield will be similar to what you can get in a fund. Hi fre...

Thanks for the link, empb. I had read that topic earlier but I am not sure if it applies in this context. Appreciate quick replies KyleAAA and Toons. I like VFSTX too. But isn't that better suited for tax deferred accounts like IRA/401Ks? In my initial reading, I read again and again to keep the tax efficiency in mind and hence the dilemma I guess. Or am I trying to optimize it too much?
