Re: Help With A Quick Tax Question

Vanguard sends you a 1099-R when you take a withdrawal from your traditional IRA.

I did not take a withdrawal. So, do I need to send any form to the IRS?

Help With A Quick Tax Question [IRA Contribution]

This is my first time filing taxes after having an IRA. I contributed 5,000 to a traditional IRA last year. Will I receive a form from Vanguard for this? What Turbo Tax product should I use? Generally, what do I do. Thank you in advance.

Re: Recent Retiree - Target Retirement Income or Wellesley F

I am about to pull the trigger on this with a 50/50 allocation b/w the two funds; however, does anyone have any final thoughts?

Also, I am a bit nervous about this "fiscal cliff" talk. Might it be prudent to wait a couple weeks?? Sigh...

Re: Recent Retiree - Target Retirement Income or Wellesley F

Is there an AA calculator online that will give me the exact AA if I divide my funds evenly between the Target Retirement Fund and the Wellesley Fund?

Re: Recent Retiree - Target Retirement Income or Wellesley F

Thank you all.

I think I may just go with a 50/50 ratio b/w these two funds. What do ya'll think?

Recent Retiree - Target Retirement Income or Wellesley Fund?

Recent retiree - 71 years old. Looking to roll over an IRA (350k) into a Vanguard IRA. Most likely, monthly withdrawals will not be much more than the RMD. I'm interested in both the Target Retirement Income Fund (VTINX) and the Wellesley Income Fund Admiral Shares (VWIAX). I cannot decide which fun...

Re: Investment advice for retired widow/widower - help.

For now, keep whatever is distributed to you in cash or short-term FDIC CDs and wait until you feel more settled and secure. Might it be appropriate to place the cash from the life insurance into an online savings account for the time being? I see that Barclays' rate is 1%. Seems better than any sh...

Re: Investment advice for retired widow/widower - help.

Do you love living in the house? Are you able to do the upkeep/maintenance yourself? Would you prefer a smaller house, townhome, or condo? I'd answer those questions first. If you want to stay where you are, paying off the mortgage seems to be the most prudent course. I love this home, the communit...

Re: Investment advice for retired widow/widower - help.

Are your prperty taxes low?. If they are lower than the standard deduction it seems almost certain that you should pay off the mortgage. As noted there is no safe way to get a 5.5% return The property taxes are roughly $3,200/year. In addition to the property taxes, HOA costs are roughly $1,800/yea...

Re: Investment advice for retired widow/widower - help.

John,

Thank you for your reply. I will call tomorrow to find out more information about the annuity. The life insurance is paid in cash ($300k). Assume monthly expenses to be roughly $2,500-$3,000. Also, I should note that the monthly mortgage payment is $1k, with 20 years remaining.

Investment advice for retired widow/widower - help.

Basic rundown of the facts: Recent widow/widower (retired - over 70 years of age). No debt other than a $125k mortgage @ 5.5% ($1k monthly mortgage - 20 years left - approximately $200k in equity). Low monthly living expenses (paid off vehicle, no health issues, relatively frugal). $300k life insur...
