Re: Share the (real) ways you do financial arithmetic mental

My grandfather worked for National Cash Register, but he never needed one for himself. He used to add columns (as in twelve or fifteen numbers) of three digit numbers in his head, in what to me was a very short time. There were no shortcuts, just right answers. It always amazed me (and yes, I would...

Re: Shopping for new mortgage - Recommendations?

I have also been looking around to refinance and being my first time I feel like I'm in over my head. My number one recommendation is to make sure you have them list all the fees involved and what they are for. I've been comparing apples to oranges for a month now trying to figure out how to make se...

Re: $187 as a service fee to use a credit card to pay Federa

The CC charges the merchant a fee based on the size of the charge. And that's the problem. The cost to the credit card company is not a function of the size of the charge, so it's gouging. Just like brokerage commissions used to be a function of the size of the trade, but since the market got more ...

Re: House Appraisal Drops Right before Refinancing

Who is the "Auditor"? Your local taxing authority? If so I would not assume their number reflects an actual appraisal of your home's value. Yes, I was using the County Auditor's value. I used Zillow and they gave a value similar to when we bought it for $168,500, which is much better for ...

House Appraisal Drops Right before Refinancing

Hi everyone. I posted a few months ago asking for some advice for my fiance and myself. The consensus was that we should pay down our mortgage and refinance so there was no more $75/month PMI payments. The original loan was for $175,000 @5.5% (ouch) in 2009 and the house was appraised for $169,000. ...

Re: Need a 403b provider from this list

Thank you Helot, your advice has been very useful. I've looked into that plan and it seems way better than anything else. After doing a bit of research on 403b vs 457, it seems like the 457 is better for her anyway. We are only 25, so none of the catch-up clauses are relevant right now. We will hope...

Need a 403b provider from this list

I made a post last week about my fiance setting up a 403b account and I found out that they were charging her 2% in fees. I looked at the list of alternatives and didn't find Vanguard, Fidelity, or TIAA-CREF. We are going to cancel her current deduction until we get our mortgage to 80% and refinance...

Re: Help needed to change my employer's 403b administrator

Thanks for the information gwrvmd. I am helping my fiance look into her 403b options after I found out she was being charged 2% in fees. Unfortunately her school has 0 good options out of the 8-9 providers available. Apparently it is the school board treasurer that gets to make all these decisions a...
