Re: selling RSU immediately

You are making a bet. Maybe it will pay off big, but maybe it won't. The problem is that if it doesn't, you may find yourself with RSUs that are worth less than the vesting price, and without a job. It is tempting to think ''but my company is different, we can't ever do THAT bad!" In fact, this...

Re: Consulting fees: non working travel time

I do engineering consulting, and my rule for charging for travel is simple and fair (at least I'd like to think of it that way!) Traveling for you (my client) prevents me from working on other clients' projects, so I believe it is fair to charge you something. I can't really do work for you either, ...

Re: Euros for a regular retail client

One other thing to keep in mind: When paying with a credit card (almost anywhere outside the US now), the vendor will often ask whether you want the charge in US dollars or local currency. My experience has been that you always want to choose 'local currency' and let your credit card handle the conv...

Re: To form an(other) LLC or not

Regarding the franchise tax in Texas, it all depends on how much you gross in a year. The first $1M in revenue does not pay tax, and if you have revenues under $10M, the tax is 0.575%. Also notice that you get taxed on revenue , not on net profits. Regards, TheExMex *** ...but yes, check with an acc...

Re: New vs. Used Honda CRV

We bought a new CR-V in May of 2000. We had a leaky radiator that had to be replaced 10 years later for something like $250. We also replaced the timing belt and water pump somewhere around the 10 year mark, too...about $800-$1k. Other than that, just oil changes, brakes and tires :) We have come to...

Re: Best way to exchange USD for vacation?

Agree with everyone regarding using an ATM with your no-fee debit card. Changing paper money gets you the worst deal, especially at airports. I have been to the UK a several times for work over the last three years. The last few times I managed to survive an entire week without any cash or a chip-an...

Re: Have 5 years to repay 20k. Where should I put it?

You already got your answer as far as where to put the money. As many others have said, this is your parents - so why not make it a win-win for everyone? For example, let's say you need a car loan and the best rate you can get is 5%. If you family offers to make you a loan, why not make it a formal ...

Re: Need tIps for moving portfolio from Ameriprise to Vangua

I did this earlier in the summer. Here a few other things to keep in mind: * The $100 transfer fee is *per account*. This is their "don't let the door hit you on your way out" fee. If you are in any kind of 'wrap account' where you pay a percentage of your assets as a commission, the savin...

Re: Medallion Signature Guarantee

I just went through this about three months ago. Here is how I did it: I went to my credit union, and although they could do the Medallion signature guarantee, their limit was very low. While I was in the branch manager's office, she called around to other banks to see who would do it for us. Most b...

Re: Extreme Early Retirement

Re: Yet another Ameriprise customer... [Wrap acc't, performa

I wanted to revive this thread with an update for anyone considering moving from Ameriprise to Vanguard. After a lot of work-related travel, we finally decided to call it quits with Ameriprise and move to Vanguard. I used a lot of that travel time to read the "Boglehead's Guide" and "...

Re: Yet another Ameriprise customer... [Wrap acc't, performa

Thanks to everyone who responded. I spent a lot of time on the Vanguard site today, and was happy to see that almost everything we have at Ameriprise can be transferred 'in-kind', so we can leave Ameriprise sooner rather than later, and then take our time deciding how best to handle the 'stinky' fun...

Yet another Ameriprise customer... [Wrap acc't, performance]

Hello fellow Bogleheads. I am mostly a lurker, but once again I need some help, so I am turning to y'all: My wife and I had been working with an 'independent' Ameriprise financial advisor for the last 10 years or so. We were actually quite satisfied with the advice and the performance of our investm...

Saving for college with a twist - Foreign beneficiary

Hi Everyone! After lurking here for a while, I figured it is time to ask for advice from wiser folks: My wife and I have decided to open a college savings account for our best friend's 3-year-old daughter. She is not a US citizen (and does not live in the US) so we can't use a 529 plan. At this poin...
