Re: How do 2013 & 2014 contributions work for my Roth IRA?

Good thing I asked! I have just been assuming that it is still contributing to my 2013 account. I will call them ASAP and top that account off. Thanks for the help :)

How do 2013 & 2014 contributions work for my Roth IRA?

I have a Roth IRA set up with VanGaurd. I have been told I can keep making contributions to my 2013 Roth IRA until April 14-15th (whatever the last day for taxes are). I have about 1000 dollars to go till I hit $5500. I'm thinking of taking my tax refund and dumping it into my Roth so I can get an e...

Help with my AA across multiple accounts

I am looking to set up my 401K at my place of employment and I need some advice on how to make sure my AA is optimized for me. I'm 26 years old right now and I just recently set up a Target Retirement Roth IRA fund with Vanguard. I put my money into the 2060 fund which is split like this... 90% Stoc...

Re: Where do I go from here?

All, I appreciate the advice you have given me so far! However, I wasn't necessarily looking for "holes" in my plan per say but more of a guide on where to invest from here and how I should go about my AA. For example, a few of you have pointed out that 360/month will not max out my Roth I...

Re: Where do I go from here?

Tell me about your emergency fund. And what's the interest rate on that loan? And what are your goals for your money? Vacation? New motorcycle? Home downpayment? Dowry? Oh yes of course! I knew I was forgetting something J I have $6,000 for my emergency fund right now. That would last me 6 months i...

Where do I go from here?

Bogleheads, As some of you may recall I started investing (finally) just a few weeks ago. I set up a Roth IRA account and I have automatic payments going in weekly. So by the time next April rolls around I will have that account max out for the year of 2013. Background on me: Age: 26 Location: Madis...

Re: Questions about my Finances, where to begin w/ investing

If I just want to make sure my AA is set right. So if I did s&p 500 index fund in a 401k - would that technically raise my stock allocation up for all of my overall investments? Yes. If you put 500 Index in your 401k plan that would increase your stock to bond ratio for the portfolio. But if yo...

Re: Questions about my Finances, where to begin w/ investing

Congrats on getting started. That is an important step. If you haven't set up automatic contributions, do that right away. You will never miss the money if you don't see it. When you're getting started, the most important factor is how much you save. Thank you! I did set up weekly contributions as ...

Re: Questions about my Finances, where to begin w/ investing

Thank you for all the advise so far Bogleheads! I figured at this point it was best to start a Roth IRA for now and once I start lowering more expenses and making more money I will contribute to a 401K (once I'm at a new employer) then finally getting into taxable accounts. So after reading quite a ...

Re: Dollar Cost Average (DCA) VS. Value Averaging (VA)

OP, Search the forum. There are a number of threads that discuss VA. I did take a quick look for VA before I created this thread. I didn't see anything comparing DCA and VA. VA is not "market timing" in the traditional sense. There is a specific formula for projecting the VA path, and you...

Dollar Cost Average (DCA) VS. Value Averaging (VA)

I have been reading many books on the topic of investing as I've already mentioned. On the forums I hear a lot about DCA and how one should stick with this plan. It makes sense to me because you aren't timing the market and one can also set up automatic payments to make life easy. However... I read ...

Re: Questions about my Finances, where to begin w/ investing

One's contributions to a 401(k) belong to you and are vested. So I am not sure what you are writing about when you say "vested". It is true that employer contributions may have a vesting schedule, but I think that should not figure into this. I mean that any of the contributions my employ...

Re: Questions about my Finances, where to begin w/ investing

What is the interest rate on your car loan? Are you sure you want your emergency fund in a 5 year cd? You might need it sooner; many cd's have provisions allowing you to break them for a penalty, but many also say they can alter the terms at any time. Check on this to make sure you are ok. Just inv...

Re: Questions about my Finances, where to begin w/ investing

Do you have 401? What is interest rate on car loan? What is your tax bracket and do you think will be in higher tax bracket in the years to come? How old are you? John I don't currently have a 401K set up with my employer because I don't plan on staying till I'm vested. It's with Charles Schwab and...
