Software to consolidate investments across accounts
Hello Experts, I am looking for suggestions for software that I can use to track my investments across different accounts (401K, IRA, taxable and bank accounts). What I expect from it: 1. Being able to import investments from different accounts automatically 2. Being able to consolidate the investments and show me how the money is invested across different categories i.e stock vs. bond and within each category show detailed info like large, medium and small cap, growth vs balanced etc I am not much concerned about features like alerts when money is being withdrawn or bill pay as I am always on top of it and can do it myself. I have so far tried Mint.com and FutureAdvisor.com (which used to be free but not any more). I have got some recommen...

Term life insurance query
Hi experts, I am planning to buy a term life insurance. Based on my research here and outside it looks like a term life insurance for 10 years and $600K would cost me anywhere between $17 - $20/month. Firstly thank you for the suggestions and education on the different insurance options. Without this I would still be scratching my head about this whole insurance thing. The more I think the more questions I get in my mind and I turn to this wonderful forum for the top 2 questions that are in my mind right now: 1. What would happen to my coverage if I am to cancel my policy midway? Is there penalty for cancellation or would my policy just elapse? 2. Assuming that I paid $20/month for a $600K and 10 year term life, I would end up paying a tota...

Tax on profit from exchange of funds in a 401K account
Hello experts, I believe someone here would be able to help me with this question. I participate in my employer sponsored 401K plan and I contribute to both traditional and Roth 401K. I balanced the account few times in 2012 and as part of it exchanged some mutual funds for others that had lower expense ratio and better returns. The NAV of the entire portfolio increased as a result of the exchange. My 401K plan administrator provides a breakdown of the source of income into the 401k plan and a sum total of the exchange amount but not the breakdown of the exchange. When I start withdrawing money from the traditional 401K how do I determine what portion of the gain resulted from the exchange of funds acquired from traditional 401K sources for...

Investment in taxable account
Hi,
I am planning to invest in Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF in a taxable account and the reason I want to do this is to be able to liquidate it and reclaim the money. My questions are:
1. Is VTI a good investment for a taxable account?
2. Are there other ETFs that I should be looking at besides VTI for investment in a taxable account?
I am not a citizen and might have to leave the country at any time which makes it difficult for me to invest in tax deductible and tax-advantaged investments like IRA. That is primarily the reason for me to look at investments that can be quickly liquidated if need be. If this topic has already been discussed please point me to the thread.
Thanks

Bank question [Online or Brick and Mortar?]
Hey, I have a checking and savings account with a national bank but I am terribly dis-satisfied with their fee for non proprietary ATM withdrawals. I am thinking about moving to a non brick and mortar online bank (like Ally) that also gives me higher rates for checking and savings account. 1. What are your thoughts about online banks? Can I trust them with my money? Has anyone used their online deposit scheme? Is it hassle free? 2. Most of them claim that they are FDIC insured which rests some of my fears but what is the possibility of them going out of business? In that case how long does it take to get my money back from FDIC? 3. I have found my current brick and mortar bank useful in some cases like getting free secure box and having som...

Is additional insurance required?
Hi,
I am a 34 year old and have $450K term life insurance from my employer. My family too have life insurance as part of my benefits. I am contemplating buying extra term life insurance but somehow feel that it will be an overkill as I already have insurance from my employer.
1. Am I correct?
2. What are some of the reasons to buy extra term life insurance?
Thanks for any inputs

Asset allocation question for 34 year old
I am a newbie investor and mostly do self-directed investments based on information gathered from public sources and conversations with friends and colleagues. I looked at the current asset allocation in my 401K and was surprised to see that I have 0% allocated to bonds. I have read at several forums that bond allocation should equal ones age. I would like an expert pair of eyes look at my current asset allocation and suggest if I need changes to it. Emergency funds: 6 months of expense Debt free Tax Filing Status: Married Filing Jointly with dependent children Tax Rate: 28% Federal, 0% State State of Residence: WA Age: 34 Desired Asset allocation: 70% stocks / 30% bonds Desired International allocation: 20% of stocks Current retirement ass...

Traditional IRA question
Hi, I am a resident alien and a newbie in investing. I am planning to open a traditional IRA in order to take advantage of the tax deductions. However given the looming fiscal cliff and tax increases associated(although it does not affect a IRA account), I have the following questions for the investment pros here: 1. Is this a good time to open an IRA? Given the recent mud slide in the stock market and indexes I am afraid if this may not be the right time to start an IRA and invest in mutual funds, ETFs and other investment options. Is it safe to go all cash until the un-certainity clears out? 2. My primary aim for opening a traditional IRA is to take advantage of the tax deductions. However given my alien status is Roth IRA a better choice...
