Any other thoughts on this? Does it make sense to use RMDs to fund the conversion of a TIRA to a Roth over time?

As livesoft indicated, a tax credit for FY 2011 does not count as FY 2012 earned income. Your 2012 IRA contribution cannot exceed your earned income for the year.
