Re: Your 529 Plan - Thoughts and Strategies

1. How old are your children who you're saving for? Ages 4 and 2. 2. Which 529 Plan do you invest in? Currently in Vanguard's (Nevada) age-based aggressive growth. Previously was in a similar USAA Nevada plan. Switched due to lower expense ratio and no annual fee. 3. What's the current balance? Roug...

TSP Expense Ratios updated for 2014 (CY 2013)

I got my annual statement a few weeks ago. I'm used to them simply giving an overall expense ratio (which can be seen at link at the bottom). However, this is the first time I've seen them break it down by fund. So, while the overall is 0.029% (2.9 basis points), here's how the individual funds brea...

Re: Domestic vs. International Stock Allocation

There's no right answer to this question because nobody can tell the future. I think that I'm very poor at working my question. There is a theorycrafting question in the first post, so I"ll amend it with: Given that the idea behind indexing is to avoid timing the market by owning the entire ma...

Domestic vs. International Stock Allocation

First off, I want to apologize if this has been beaten to death. I did use the forum search function, and this was an extensive topic in 2009/2010, with a decent rehash in 2011. There's also been brief mentions within more current threads of other topics. I also wanted to clarify that I am posting t...

Re: best cash back credit card

I'm making a second post to break this up, as it was WAY too long (again, I'll check back more often). My wife received a letter yesterday about "exciting new changes" coming to the rewards program with her Capital One card. It used to be 2 percent cash back on "travel-related purchas...

Re: best cash back credit card

I need to check back more often. I see that my post caused a bit more conversation than I had expected. While my intent was to simply offer another perspective for the OP to consider, it's clear that I caused some misunderstanding, likely due to poor wording on my part. I wanted to clarify that. But...

Re: best cash back credit card

You've received a lot of good suggestions within this thread, so I'm going to take a different approach. Don't go looking for the best cash back credit card. The best ones typically aren't money makers for the issuer. They're used to lure in more customers, and then the rewards program gets altered ...

Re: What do you do with your cash back rewards?

I let my rewards accumulate throughout the year, and then cash them in (typically as statement credit) in November. This greatly softens the blow for Christmas shopping.

Re: Your Preference on Credit Card

Primary - I use an American Express Blue Cash Preferred for all household expenses 1/3/6%, most of our shopping is at the JBLM Commissary, which gives us the 6% and they're cheaper than even Walmart. Secondary - Fidely Visa Signature for anything that doesn't take Amex, or would fall into the Amex 1...

Re: Admiral Shares for Target Retirement and Life Strategy F

Thank you Medion. I want to apologize as I gave some misinformation. I completely blanked out and misunderstood the rebalancing. I misunderstood that as changing their aset allocation (as target date funds get more conservative over time). In this case, it dawned on me what you meant by rebalancing...

Re: Fund allocation input requested - Roth IRA and Roth TSP

Hey Paul, thanks for taking the time to review my post. I think your savings rate is very good, and I'll assume that you are doing all you can with contributions to retirement right now and that's why your wife does not have a Roth. Correct. With my raises and her getting a job, I'll be aiming to ma...

Re: Fund allocation input requested - Roth IRA and Roth TSP

First, I wanted to apologize if my post was covered by numerous other threads. The forum search tools are kind of weak (as they are with this particular software, not a slam against Bogleheads) and I had to use Google to find most of the relevant threads. My questions have been debated to death in o...

Re: Admiral Shares for Target Retirement and Life Strategy F

Cookie - two things (which seemed to always be the case for me, maybe I'm OCD? :D ) First, the 0.086% was based on a full portfolio of admiral shares, something that you cannot get with the same mixed as the TR fund until you're near half a million $. So, your expense ratio early on will be higher. ...

Re: Transfer Roth IRA to TSP Roth?

Hello, I started a Roth IRA with Vanguard 2x years ago, maxing it out both years. This year I have been putting money into a TSP Roth through work. I was wondering if any of you would suggest transferring what I have in Vanguard to the TSP Roth. I'm kind of new to the TSP program and so I don't kno...

Re: Admiral Shares for Target Retirement and Life Strategy F

This is unlikely to happen. So, here's a two part post. The first is what I think that you should consider doing. The second is why this is highly unlikely. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: This is something that you can essentially do yourself, if you desire (though I do agree with your concerns). If you DIY, h...
