Re: Income from foreign business goes on personal tax return

All I know about this topic is that a US citizen is taxed on worldwide income. I believe the exemption, or deferral, you refer to relates to foreign subsidiaries of US corporations, when earnings are accumulated within the subsidiary and not paid out to the parent company.

Firms that provide this service of acting as trustee or executor are called trust companies, or banking institutions which have trust powers to act in this capacity. Only these firms that are chartered in this way by a state or the Federal Comptroller of the Currency can act in this role.

You should be able to obtain a sample estate accounting in your estate. Basically, you have schedules for property received, disbursed & on hand along with a proposed distribution schedule. Normally principal and income are kept separate

You can take it from either or both funds. Like any other investment, you're better off selling high rather than selling low. However, if you reinvest the RMD in the same funds from which it came it would make no difference.

OP, are you saying that this 90 year old set up a trust so that he/she could become impoverished (Medicaid requires that) and thus qualify for a Medicaid facility instead of leaving the possibility for privately paying for a superior facility? If you and your parents consider it "reimbursing" for expenses previously advanced by your parents, it is not even a gift. Write the check and forget about it. No need to file anything.

It appears that the trust won't be of a long duration before it terminates. I would invest quite conservatively, perhaps a 20/80 equity/fixed income. The remaindermen may have differing investment objectives and therefore they can invest as they see fit upon termination.

Depends on the purpose of the trust, the ages and need of the income beneficiaries and the disposition of the trust upon the death of the grantor. Are you sure this is irrevocable? Impossible to give you a simple answer.

You will pay the retail exchange rate on smaller amounts. There are banks in the US that maintain deposit accounts in foreign currencies so there is no need to go out of the country for this purpose.

Probably because you're intelligent enough and careful enough with your money that you realize it is something you really don't need. I spent $175 on a watch while on a cruise two years ago and now realize I didn't really even need that. Being retired I rarely have need for any kind of watch.

The biggest risk in preparing your own will is that it could be invalid. That means you're dead and your property passes by your state's laws of intestacy. Do you want to risk that?

My experience at the Ritz-Carlton is that you pay for anything additional, even tipping the attendant to get a towel at the pool. The services and dining are wonderful but it all comes at a price.
