Re: Airline "oversize" luggage -- how to measure?

American Air allows two (free) checked bags per person, plus the usual two to carry on. The weight limit for checked bags is 70 pounds each. Additional checked bags are $75 each. Bags that are excess size or weight pay an additional $175.

Airline "oversize" luggage -- how to measure?

Wife and I have tickets on American Airlines for a February trip to Brazil. We will be taking about eight large bags (say, 29-inch-size) with the contents intended for others. We have not purchased these bags yet. The issue is how to measure each bag so as not to trigger the $175 per bag "overs...

Is a hand-written Federal tax return an audit magnet?

I am handwriting my Form 1040, then mailing it.

Would it be better if I typed it, then mailed? Or, submitted it using TurboTax (or similar)?

In short, does the submittal format matter?

Re: Why does my lawnmower leave a stripe?

To the respondents above: 1. I will check underneath to make sure it is clean. 2. All wheels are set at the same height. All panels and chutes are in place. 3. I am pushing (not pulling) the mower. I have tried pushing it at a very slow speed. I am mulching, not bagging. 4. Sharpen the blade: I will...

Why does my lawnmower leave a stripe?

21" self-propelled Black Max mower (from Sam's) with Honda GCV 160cc engine. Eight-inch tires, each adjustable to 5 positions. Purchased April 2008. Progressively over the past few years each pass of the mower leaves a stripe (all- or partially-uncut grass) along the centerline of the pass -- e...

Why does my instant coffee overflow?

I have one shot of instant coffee each morning. I fill the cup to the half point, bring to a boil in the microwave. then add one teaspoon of coffee crystals. Automatic ice maker -- no ice!

Maytag Plus refrigerator -- Model RDT2100DAE

The automatic ice maker inside the freezer of this unit is usually reliable, but about once per year it stops making ice. Within 24-48 hours the ice maker starts again.

It's been five days.

Advice?

How to verify a tire pressure gage?

I can verify the time by using the TV, radio, or internet -- very precise, very easy.

How do I know if my tire pressure gage is correct? I am now using a dial-type readout, but the question applies to any type gage.

Your feedback re: Alaska cruise

Newly retired couple in Atlanta. Beginning to look at an Alaska cruise -- our first cruise. At the moment, talking with USAA-associated travel firm.

Worth fixing a 30-year-old Maytag dryer?

We have a Maytag DE410 electric dryer and a Maytag A710 washer, both purchased new in 1983. They have served well over the years, but now the dryer is making rattle noises. I checked the drive motor/belt pulley/tensioner module via the access hatch, but the noises seem to be coming from the drum rol...

Restaurant gift cards at a discount

Lots of these credit-card-sized gift cards seem to be available. I see several with a few cents off the listed price, but I would like to find (say) 10% off.

What's available out there? On-line or in-store purchase. Up-scale restaurant or fast-food. Any scams to beware?

Replacing a car radio

I have a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo (200K) with the original sound system -- AM/FM/tape player. The tape player is shot. I still expect to drive this car for another 50K. I plan to replace the radio/tape unit with a radio/CD unit. What is the best approach? Let a car audio shop (or similar) do it? Or can I do...

Things to beware with septic pumpout?

I am about to pay $300 to have my 1000-gallon septic tank pumped. Never done in 15 years. Not an emergency -- not having any problems.

I am asking advice from others who have done this. What should I beware of from the pumping contractor?

Re: Securing double-hung windows

What about drilling thru the wood where both sashes overlap, then inserting a removable pin -- being very careful not to drill the glass.

Securing double-hung windows

All the windows in my 20-year-old home are double hung (insulated glass). Over the years I have noticed that the upper sash seems to drop about 1/2" to 1" over a month's time. I find myself re-setting them frequently. The standard sash lock has little effect.

Ideas?

Re: Group Long-Term Care Insurance

I am thinking the basic concept of any type of "group" coverage is that the insurance company must agree to cover anyone in the group at the group rate. Therefore, the LTCi carrier knows that it will be forced to accept some applicants of lower health. Therefore, the carrier will boost its...
