Re: % assets in retirement vs. non-retirement accounts?

This is a good topic. I just now came across it after reading Rick Rodger's book, The New Three Legged Stool for Retirement. Are there "target" percentages of assets in retirement vs. non-retirement accounts that you all try to achieve, or is it just the natural flow of things with your cu...

Re: Is there any reason to buy individual bonds instead of f

Have you seen our wiki page discussing this? Thanks so much for sharing the wiki link! I've been looking for a good reference about this as well because I was believe in Larry Swedroe's books that I read, he states that investing in actual bonds is more efficient than investing in bond mutual funds...

Re: Permanent Portfolio Performance Charts

The Permanent Portfolio is really a fascinating thing! I put together a chart of it's backtested performance during the 1999-2001 downturn, and it was amazing how steady it continued to grow during that time period. The key is that you have to have the discipline to stick with it over the long run ...

Re: 39 y.o. and 18 years of Vanguarding

Thanks so much for sharing your story! Very inspirational to hear about it from someone who has been through a couple downturns. I also started saving at age 22 fresh out of college as an engineer as well. I'm curious - what does your portfolio consist of? Is it the 3-4 index funds that are often di...

Re: Should I Add Vanguard Precious Metals MF to Asset Alloca

Thanks so much for the insight Momar! Very much appreciated. I have been a passive investor for about 4-5 years now, so I know a few things, but compared to you all here, I admit I am very much a newbie to investing and still learning. My portfolio consists of the following asset allocation, using t...

Re: Should I Add Vanguard Precious Metals MF to Asset Alloca

Thanks so much to everyone for excellent insight! Lots of good things to think about! Regarding my reason for looking at adding precious metals to my portfolio, I would be looking to add it as a long term addition to my asset allocation, not some short term thing to try to make some money hoping to ...

Should I Add Vanguard Precious Metals MF to Asset Allocat.?

In Bernstein's book, 4 Pillars of Investing, he talks about adding a Precious Metals mutual fund (like the one at Vanguard) to your asset allocation after you reach a point where you have a sufficient asset base to be easily able to add it in given the investment minimums. I believe he recommends ab...

Re: Recommendations for good marriage finance books?

Thanks so much for the welcome and congrats! That's actually a great recommendation. I've read a lot of books in the past few years about personal finance and investing and sort of skimmed over the parts that didn't apply to me at the time. However, as new things happen in life, I probably should re...

Recommendations for good marriage finance books?

Hi Bogleheads (this is my first post here :happy )! I've recently gotten engaged (great success!), and we're planning to be married in 2014. As such, I wanted to begin reading up on the whole marriage-finance thing since most of what I've studied so far applies to being single. Any one read any real...
