I think you should have a mixture of stocks and bonds in both your 401k and Roth. One reason is that your purchases in your 401k are periodic and thus you are dollar cost averaging which will reduce your chances of a big loss (and also big gain). One option is to exercise the options as they vest, pay the taxes and keep the stocks. This way any increase from that point will be taxed as capital gains and not income. If you sell after one year you will pay the long term capital gain rate.
