Re: Edward Jones to Vanguard?

I unfortunately have owned American Funds......I've had a good run with them actually....just could have been better if I had started out with Vanguard/Fidelity etc. There is a place for Edward Jones type places.....and it fit me at one time until I caught up a bit on how to invest.

Re: Edward Jones to Vanguard?

Sorry...not true. Once you get over (I think) $25,000....which the OP had....if he put it in at one time it is not 5.75%. Even if he put it in a little at a time....the first $25k would be at 5.75%....above that point (in his EJ account) it will be less than 5.75%. I HAD an account with EJones.....I...

Re: Edward Jones to Vanguard?

shersch- Actually...I see it constantly. When somebody quotes the upfront cost of buying and Edward Jones fund they always use the 5.75% front load number. I am not talking about selling another Templeton type fund.....I am talking regular American Funds kind of stuff. If you start up a fund...say A...

Re: Edward Jones to Vanguard?

There seems to be an overwhelming misconception that EJones charges 5.75% on EVERYTHING right up front. Well...it does at first, but as you put more and more in the % comes steadily down. In fact...I believe if you were to just put in....say...$200k it would be closer to 3% (still more than you woul...

Re: Edward Jones to Vanguard?

I just finalized moving from EJ to Vanguard.....keeping it simple, maybe not simple enough.....but better than Edward Jones. The annuity pushes just got too me.

Re: Starting Vanguard ending EJones

retiredjg- Thanks....a bunch. I just don't have the skills to crank out a few easy to understand choices like you did. Leaning towards your option 4 at this time. Hopefully all the money will be there tomorrow so I can get it set up.

With $18k in pension.....and maybe $10k in supplement....don't think the $72K barrier will be broken.

Re: Starting Vanguard ending EJones

Thanks for the info....need to read through it again since I just got back from golfing.....having a beer is a priority at the moment. Just a point though....I shouldn't be in the 25% bracket since I file jointly with my wife. I think the limit on flipping from 15% to 25% is $72,500.....unless I am ...

Re: Starting Vanguard ending EJones

Sent something earlier....must have done something wrong since it didn't show up. SS Supplement- I took VERA(early retirement) from a Govt/military job teaching.....part of the deal is I get a ss supplement at 56 to age 62 (when I am eligible for regular SS). This is hopefully going to be $700+ for ...

Re: Starting Vanguard ending EJones

If you take the $313k and add the money from the bonds coming due over the next couple of years......you are around $370k. My last EJones statement said I had $372k total....won't know EXACTLY what the total is to be carried over until the end of the week when it shows up in my Vanguard account. The...

Re: Starting Vanguard ending EJones

Lots of moving parts here. Some questions... 1) It sounds like you are not taking any money from the nest egg (TSP and soon to be Vanguard accounts) right now. Is that correct? *We haven't touched our nest egg yet...but VERY soon will. *Total in Vanguard by the end of the week will be $370k. *Total...

Starting Vanguard ending EJones

In the process of moving all the Edward Jones account over to Vanguard, money should be available at Vanguard in the next day or two. Currently coming up on 2 years retirement in June. Living outside Spokane WA with my UK wife. Possibility of moving back to N Yorkshire in 5-10 years, but funds would...

Re: Effect of rising rates on Wellington

dbr- I also have tons of doubts. I am in the middle of moving all the money I had in Edward Jones...about $365k (yes, my using EJones explains a lot of my actions)....over to Vanguard. Of that money, about $74k are already tied up in coming cash/CD/corporate over the next 3+ years, so the amount I a...

Effect of rising rates on Wellington

Thinking about tossing some money into the Wellington ($260k).....but as with a lot of people I wonder about the bond portion of this fund with what are likely rising interest rates in the next year or so. From what I read, it seems that a 1% rise in rates punch the bonds for a 15% drop in price. Th...

Re: Portfolio advice

Thanks again. Other than the loads.....and the 12b-1....are there any other expenses built in? Or does anything else pop up just when the funds have activity/switches?

Re: Portfolio advice

Thanks for the reply's. I got into EJones knowing there were upfront loads...no complaint there, although only the beginning loads are 5.75%....goes steadily lower and goes away if you have 1 million(I don't). Just getting to find a few of the other costs that are hard to find. I have a few books (4...

Portfolio advice

Currently coming up on 2 years retirement in June. Living outside Spokane WA with my UK wife. Possibility of moving back to N Yorkshire in 5-10 years, but funds would be pretty limited for doing that. Total money at this time is approx. $800K. About $367K through Edward Jones + $420K TSP Govt. While...

Re: Novice with 403b and TSP questions

The Social Security Supplement may not be as high as you think. The one I am going to begin this summer at 56 will be well less than SS. They state (at least for mine) that you will get approx 2/3rd of what your SS estimate will be....but they base that on only the years you have worked for the Govt...

Take all this one step further....I am married to a UK lady and we plan to move back to the Spokane area in 2 years (already have a house there). I have been advised to find a specialist in trust/lawyer who knows the rules on this. The easy solution is evidently to have my wife become a US citizen (...

No offense meant Ron.....I will have probably the 500k in "stuff", 16K pension, SS, SS sup, getting out at 54 ....not going to be rich, but my goals don't need that. Spokane is fairly easy on the money. 25x your income will set you up nice....I wish in my case. Is my case totally safe...no...

I am a US citizen married to a UK lady. We are moving back to the Spokane area in a couple of years. When to move TSP money

I got out of the C+I funds back in Nov 07 when things were looking like tanking and moved everything to the G fund. Good move for once. Then the market just got stuck at about 12,000 DOW for a while....what the heck, I moved 30% back over to the C fund. Then when it hit about 11,000 I moved another ...

Is this possible?

Here is the situation I am in……a LOT of if’s, and likely just plain unrealistic thinking involved. I am a 51 years old working for the Dept. of Defense schools in England. Coming up on two years ago I married (for the first time) a local UK lady. I just figured I would work another 7-8 years and ret...
