Re: Mortgage payoff account

Hello, Even more great points, liquidity, ROI, safe investing, etc. This all started with the 400 per month I was paying on my wife's student loan at 3.375 (before deductions). Once it got to about 2500 I just paid the loan off. So now I thought I would just redirect the 400 per month to my mortgage...

Re: Mortgage payoff account

In my old house I made extra principal payments which lowered the overall principal but did not change my monthly payments that were set by the amortization schedule. I thought what you guys are describing is essentially a recast. I made extra principal payments on my car loan to pay it off faster ...

Re: Mortgage payoff account

Good comments, thanks for them. I have the self control and responsibility to not touch the money. I spoke with vanguard today and they sent me the forms to set up the account for this. I'll probably go with an index fund to start but will consider a target date fund, where the date corresponds to w...

Mortgage payoff account

Hi, I have a mortgage payment of about 5k per month p+I with about 28.5 yrs to go. This was a refi at 4.5 after we were in the house for 1.5 years. We have no plans to move. If I kick in an extra 400 per month, after 20 years that would be 96k off the principal, and eliminate about the last 20 payme...

Re: Should I roll over 403b to IRA with backdoor Roth

Are quite sure you will still be in the same or higher tax bracket when you retire? If so then it won't hurt to roll it over and convert it..... and just pay the tax hit now. You obviously can afford it. What sort of expenses is the 403B charging? If they are high then that would be another reason ...

Should I roll over 403b to IRA with backdoor Roth

Hello, I just did the backdoor Roth for me and for my wife this year for the first time. We have no other IRAs. My wife has a 403b with her old employer, about 25k in vanguard funds. She is now a stay at home mom with no plans to go back to work. We file jointly and with deductions are close to the ...

Re: [Medical Intern] Wanting to get started but need help

Since there has been a lack of responses I will give you my MD opinion. Saving is great, but you guys have a considerable amount of loans to pay off. I would focus on eliminating debt. Hopefully when you are finished with your residency you will have have a big chunk paid down. At that point I would...

Re: Portfolio analysis needed

Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTIAX) is very tax efficient and so would be good in the taxable account. My only hesitation about putting a large int'l holding there is the question -- can you dispose of enough of your current taxable investments to do so, without inc...

Re: Portfolio analysis needed

Thanks for the replies so far. With deductions I do fall below the top bracket, so I don't make as much as estimated above. Regarding the international funds, should I dump the dodge and cox because of the ER. If so where do I put my international funds. I think not in the Roth.

Re: Please help with windfall and asset allocation

Can someone explain tilting as it applies to the house for me. Thanks, I think you are misreading titled as tilted . OP reports that the house ownership is titled as Joint with Right of Survivorship (sometimes abbreviated to JTWROS) which means should her husband predecease her, the house becomes h...

Portfolio analysis needed

Hello, I have been reading on this board and the wikis for about a month and I have really learned alot. For my age I have been very conservative and went for the lost cost IVV ETF after the market crashed in 08. I knew then I was never again going to pay someone 1% to "manage" my money. I...

Re: Please help with windfall and asset allocation

This is a very interesting thread. OP, I am an advocate of muni bonds so I am interested in what your holdings are, maturity dates, coupons, ratings. You can look up muni bond CUSIPs on municipalbonds.com (http://www.municipalbonds.com/bonds/recent). Most people will recommend you sell the bonds, an...

Re: What to do with 2.5 mill

Congrats on the sale. If you listen to the advice on this forum you will have a good chance at preserving your money. Save some of your 250k play money to help furnish the new house. The more complex question once you get yor money invested is how to live off of this money. While 2.5M seems like a f...

Re: Backdoor roth question

I researched this topic extensively and just completed my first backdoor Roth conversion yesterday. Some people are concerned that this is just a loophole and the IRS could potentially determine that tacking advantage of the backdoor Roth is just that, taking advantage. Some people take measures to ...

Backdoor Roth IRA investment choice

Hello, I have been lurking for a few weeks and reading a lot (posts, wikis, etc) and here is my first post. I currently contribute the max to my company 403b and have been looking for other Options for retirement savings. I am going to go ahead with the backdoor Roth IRA for me and maybe my wife. I ...
