Re: Australia and New Zealand

I'm about to leave for almost 4 months in Asia and only have plans for the first 2 months (China and the Philippines) so we're going to make it up as we go along and both Australia and NZ are possibilities since we'll sort of be in the neighborhood. I understand that as US citizens we'll need some k...

Re: ATM did not dispense cash but account was debited

This happened to me as well. To make matters worse when this happened I was in China. I saved the paper receipt from the Chinese ATM and when I got home I contacted my credit union. They told me that they'd look into it and within a few days the money was refunded to my account.

Re: Kroger for Gasoline

We have Kroger gas, sold here under the Kroger/QFC/Fred Meyer brand. The way it seems to work is that I get 3 cents off per gallon when I use my loyalty card, spending $100 in a month gives me another 7 cents off for a total of 10 cents off per gallon. Right now the Kroger gas station nearest to me ...

Re: What smartphone plan do you use?- off contract

Usually no roaming, but there are two exceptions I'm aware of so far. One is Consumer Cellular, which gives you partner roaming and 4G-LTE. Far as I know it's the same coverage as with AT&T. The other is Ting, which is on Sprint but gives you roaming on Verizon when you are in a Sprint deadzone...

Re: What smartphone plan do you use?- off contract

Ting is working well for us. We piggyback on WiFi whenever possible to save a bit more but if we need LTE it's there for us. We went with Ting because at the time we both had phones that we had been using with Sprint and once our Sprint contract was finaly toast taking those existing phones to Ting ...

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!

I put my papers in last week, I'll be on the job until the first week in July - Independence Day! Re: VOIP smartphone apps

This probably exceeds my pay grade. Can you walk me through the basics about how I would set this up on my smartphone? Do I need to be signed up with a VOIP provider to work through? Basically, I'd be happy signing up with PhonePower for my Obi, but I want to be able to make WiFi calls through Phon...

Re: VOIP smartphone apps

I use Acrobits on my iPhone (don't know if they have an Android app) to access my Callcentric account. Works well. There is an Android version of Acrobits. I have a Nexus 5 and it offers a way to manually configure a SIP account without any additional VOIP app, I've tried it and it works very well.

Re: 3-prong to 2-prong for laptop? & overseas?

I'm in the same old boat that you're in; old house with old 2 prong wiring and I go overseas to 220v places with fat British and 2 prong European style plugs. I took a low tech approach to this and simply cut off the grounding pin on the plug to the laptop's power brick. I pack an adapter plug and m...

Re: Google Voice Not Supported on OBi Devices After May 15 2

What's the difference between OBI Approved Service Providers vs Compatible Service providers? My guess is that Obihai will also get a commission for a sale that goes thro...

Re: Google Voice Not Supported on OBi Devices After May 15 2

I'll again suggest looking through the other providers you can use with an Obi. OBiTALK Compatible Service Providers: Anveo Broadvoice Callcentric CallWithUs Localphone OneSuite Phone Power Vitelity VoIP.ms VOIPo If you already have an Obi my opinion would be to switch to one above. We use voip.ms,...

Re: Google Voice Not Supported on OBi Devices After May 15 2

One important thing it seems like most posting in this thread aren't aware of is that any solution that works to provide service to your OBi / "landline" can also be used with your smartphone. All you need is an app for your phone that does the same thing (i.e., connect to a VoIP service)...

Re: Google Voice Not Supported on OBi Devices After May 15 2

It's puzzling that some people pretend to believe obihai.com took reasonable steps to inform their customers. Of course, it's just an act. Obihai had it out there, dated 10/31/2013 http://blog.obihai.com/2013/10/important-message-about-google-voice.html But they didn't trumpet the fact that free ca...

Re: Cutting ties with Cable

I threw Comcast TV out of our house when they started to encrypt even limited basic. Because we watch most of our TV on PC's and laptops via a Silicondust Homerun box keeping Comcast for TV would've meant we'd have to buy 2 more TV's and rent several of their decryption boxes to accommodate Comcast'...

Re: Traveling Wifi ?

I tried Boingo on my Android phone a few years ago. It sounded great on their website so I signed up but Boingo turned out to be useless, a complete and total waste of time and money. It would occasionally find a free hotspot but my phone could find these by itself without the monthly fee.
