If you have never had a Roth IRA and are considering future Roth conversions, consider opening a Roth IRA and making a small contribution/conversion in 2021 to start the 5-year clock on an initial Roth IRA.

Re: One more ready to retire thread - requesting input on big picture plan

thank you for your reply! : Do your expenses include your mortgage and healthcare? Yes! If you business is paying for healthcare now you may need to also do something like budget or an Affordable Care Act policy until you start Medicare. Once you are on Medicare then you may need to also budget to pay for a Medigap supplement. If I retired the business will be able to pay for 3 more years. I can convert my current plan anytime to personal and it will be a bit more but not awful. You also need to budget for things like when you need a replacement car or when you have a big expenses like needing a new roof. Car is paid off (2K miles and its a Honda) and yes you are right on the roof - just had the house painted and a ton of maintenance items ...

One more ready to retire thread - requesting input on big picture plan

Hi all, would like your thoughts on my (near) retirement timing and big picture plan. Thanks to this forum for so much education! I would like to retire when I am covered financially – and that may be now/very soon. That has always been the plan and I have just been keeping on keeping on reluctant to pull the trigger. I have my own business – I am currently contracting for one client that is keeping me very busy but the situation with them has changed and I would like to move on as soon as the current contract is completed at the end of this calendar year. I can do two things a) retire or b) new clients/scale back. New clients would not be difficult to land in my field. Ideally I would like to retire as I have a lot of personal interests th...

I do agility with my dog - agility is when the dog and the person run an obstacle course together. Courses are judged for speed and accuracy. The persons job is to navigate the course and give the information/instruction to the dog while running. My dog LOVES it. We also do scent work where the dog finds hidden scents in containers, vehicles, exteriors and buried and when they find the scent the dog gets rewarded. My dog LOVES that too! Keeps me in shape and learning!

Re: Fumbling through TIAA Annuity(we think..) inheritance to estate

SO we called TIAA today - the stammering rep did not want to give us the plan provisions. Was adamant that we had to disperse and take taxes out. Then he said we could call with our CPA but they could not give anything to us on the plan as it was "historical documents". I got this from my accountant: The type of annuity you own dictates whether you can roll or transfer the annuity over into an IRA without tax penalties. If you want to transfer an annuity to an IRA, you must first determine whether your annuity is qualified or non-qualified. You can move your qualified annuity without penalty, but the Internal Revenue Service will hit you with a penalty if you try to move your non-qualified annuity into an IRA account. TL;DR Your a...

Re: Fumbling through TIAA Annuity(we think..) inheritance to estate

So TIAA told my brother that it was an Annuity. And that it was only elegible for a lump sum distribution. Since my mom was a teacher it could be a 403B too and they are calling it an annuity. TIAA sent my brother forms for disbursement only and asked for his state something or other for taxes. I told him to hold off this could be a major tax mess and I spoke to my accountant who also said hold off until we have more information (if nothing else to avoid the tax mess). My brother is totally over it and its very unlikely he asked a lot of questions of the TIAA rep. We actually did not know about the account until recently. I am not able to speak to TIAA about the account as my brother is the executor of the estate (working on fixing that now).

Fumbling through TIAA Annuity(we think..) inheritance to estate

Hi love this forum! My brother and I are fumbling through dispersing one part of my moms estate. She had what we think was an annuity at TIAA. Not huge (99k) but we want to not fumble this and pay a huge hunk of taxes. TIAA has been less than helpful in all this and making things complicated and my brother who is the executor of the estate is really annoyed with it all and kind of over it. Because the account did not have any beneficiaries the account has to be paid to the estate apparently. My dad is deceased so its just my brother and I. TIAA tells us that this annuity is not eligible for "rollover" and it is only eligible for disbursement. But again they have been less than helpful.... What we really would like to do is to tran...

ADT / Security - dramatically lower rates

I have been looking at new security monitoring systems - I have ADT and it has gone up dramatically in 6 years. I was planning on switching - just for kicks i called ADT to see if they price matched and they do! I went from 71 a month to 28.12 a month with no contract. This is for 12 months and when month 11 comes up I will call them again to negotiate. She offered me 5 lower rates that I respectfully declined...

thanks Bogleheads! I did this becauseI saw a note on another thread on security. Love this forum.

The "apples to apples" comparison would be the whole premium the previous employer paid.
Look at box 12 on your W-2. The value coded "DD" is the amount your employer was paying for your health insurance.
wow - I did not know that. It was 4368 for 2016-if i could get a plan for that I would be happy - what I am finding is much more expensive - granted I am just starting the process.

Hi all, I have learned so much from Bogleheads!

I have decided to go freelance and need to get health care. Having been on an employer plan, this is something that I have never shopped for before except at enrollment periods. I am very healthy and will likely go for a high deductable plan.

Healthcare.gov was the obvious first place - that seems all up un the air and frankly it seems expensive.

Advice and suggestions please. thank you

hi OP poster here. Just saw this come to the top again.

I have cut the cord. Got a roof antenna, the guy that was painting the house this summer installed it for free. I got a Channelmaster from Amazon and a 2TB drive. This lets me record the few things on TV that I am interested in. Everything works perfectly. Took a few hours of fiddling to to get the Channelmaster to work right since i run everything through my receiver so I can use the better stereo speakers. I have Apple TV and can stream movies from the computer if needed. And the Library has a huge selection of movies too.

Only regret is that I did not do this sooner.

She is a joy every day and a member of the family. I cant believe all these years I did not have a dog. Not sure if I was a "dog person" or not but I am my Smidges' biggest fan. Smidge was a rescue and in foster care for 3 months before I got her, she was 5 years old. The first month was hard, I knew nothing but most cites have places that give classes with teachers that are volunteers so the person knows how train and handle their dog. We took 4 classe...

Re: Garage door openers - recommended brand, model?

Hi all, appreciate the responses!

After this thread and reading reviews on Amazon, I bought the high end Chamberlin model. It was not that much more expensive than low end models of any brand (like 125$). It can be controlled from my phone, it adjusts for temps(less adjustments), it slows as it gets to the ground (no more banging) and the install was 75 bucks (I am not handy).

And thank you to the person that mentioned vinyl rollers - wow - huge difference! And the install company gave me the rollers for free and did it with the garage door install at no extra charge.

I have not used all the bells and whistles yet - so far I am absolutely thrilled with this purchase and expect it to last 15++ years.

Garage door openers - recommended brand, model?

Hi all, the cold weather has finally done in my 15 year old Genie garage door opener so I am looking for a replacement. I have just started researching brands/models and there is so much more than my basic Genie. I will not be installing this myself - its about 100 bucks to have it done and I am not handy. I am looking for a brand model that will last, I do not need to have the car opener features as drive a Boglehead 2001 civic and I do not need to have to have the tech stuff either. I think I want a belt opener that is maintenance free. I am most interested in reliability and longevity. Any one have suggestions/experiences?

Anyone have a Nest learning thermostat?

Hi all, thinking of getting a Nest to save on heating and cooling bills. I currently have a thermometer that does have 4 daily settings for morning, day, evening nite and I have it set for what I think is good energy conservation. I have a 2000 sq foot house and its only me here so I only have to satisfy me and my dog with the temperature.

There are offers from the electric company for a 24 month contract and a gift card and a free Nest. I am generally suspicious of these offers but my bill is so convoluted its hard to make an evaluation.

this sting is very interesting, I have a 12 year old water heater that has been flushed every year. The last time it was flushed the furnace tech told me to "kiss it" that water heaters do not typically last 10 years. There has only ever been one person in the house and for 2 years only on the weekends. Seems like a bet hedging thing to replace it before it breaks. Any other way to tell? All that would happen is the water wold go down the drain next to it and MAYBE into the carpeted area in the art studio next to the closet it is in. If the carpet got damaged then oh well I would put tile in, was thinking about that anyway...

I have a 2001 Civic with 147K miles on it. Love this car - no car payment, dependable and I also love close to work (1 mile but need to drive for a few reasons). I suggest #1. I had a few expensive (500-1K) repairs on my Civic BUT its only every few years and the benefit of having no car payment and a very dependable car very much outweigh the expense. I have had the same mechanic work on it since it had 39 K on it - he has the same car and his is at 200k and going strong. You definitely need the timing belt and water pump replaced - I cant comment on the rest. I have the service intervals in a folder and keep up with them flawlessly -there are a few that are expensive but they are few and far in between. Ideas: I negotiated the labor rate ...

Re: Fitness Wristbands??

I have the fitbot wristband and LOVE it. Super helpful and I have the app tied to MyFitness Pal as well for the connection to diet.

Re: Cleveland Clinic

Sorry to hear your wife is ill.

Agree with all the posters on the safety of the Clinic Campus, its huge and you can walks or blocks inside. People from all of the world come to the Clinics and they are very much set up for that. Also agree the Intercontinental is the way to go. The Clinic also has a huge cafeteria that is not at all bad, certainly better than fast food. Just wanted to mention. Cleveland is a very easy town to drive in as well so getting to Little Italy which is a few miles away if you have time should not be a problem. Best of luck!
