Re: Graduation gift for non-relative

I guess I would suggest partially basing it on what you are paying him for the lawn. My gut feel would $20-$50 with a card, etc. However, if you are paying him $50 to mow the lawn, $20 is not going to cut it. If you are only paying him $10 to mow the lawn, than $50 seems excessive :-) Maybe give him...

Re: What's a Canadian to do? [Canadian living in US]

I am not sure if the Involvement of the Financial Adviser changes anything, but if she had a brokerage account in Canada, she should be allowed to make self directed transactions. However, it has not always been this way. Up until the last 5-6 years, it was dependent on which state she lived in. A C...

Re: How loud is impact noise?

As someone with tinnitus, I try to avoid loud noise but sometimes it catches me by surprise. Today, I was several feet from a couple of construction workers who dropped something from a cart (perhaps from 3-4 feet high onto a tile surface). It made a very loud crashing noise. Does anyone know if I ...

Re: How loud is impact noise?

I have had fairly bad tinnitus for quite a few years, so I know where you are coming from. I did a bit of searching on the web and found the following page: http://www.asha.org/public/hearing/noise/ It gives you examples of a number of common sounds and how many DBs they are. You might find it usefu...

Re: Stereo Receiver Suggestion

I have an older Yamaha RX-Z7 which I really enjoy, but I bought it more for my home theater than for just pure music listening. Really, you just need a 2 channel receiver. Onkyo makes affordable, yet excellent stereo receivers. The Onkyo TX-8255 receiver gets high marks, has a phono input, and is su...

Re: Cat resistant funiture

I have 4 cats. They behave most of the time, but they do seem each to go a bit nuts from time to time. I had a fabric sofa that held up well for 6-7 years. I had a leather sofa that became an embarrassment after 2 years. but I kept it for 7 years anyways :D Currently I have a micro-suede sectional a...

Re: Home Siding

We originally had LP siding and got a settlement in a class action. We opted to go with Hardiplank and have had no issues with the siding. Our neighbors across the street opted to go with Vinyl and to have their eaves wrapped in aluminum. We live in Atlanta, so I was waiting to see what the heat/sun...
